How to Explain a Termination in a Job Interview

How to Explain a Termination in a Job InterviewHow to Explain a Termination in a Job InterviewIf youhave been firedor otherwise terminated from employment, one of the toughest interview questions to answer is why you were terminated. Its difficult enough to talk about losing your job with family and friends. Its even harder when youre talking to someone youd like to offer you a job. Whats the best way to respond? How can you frame your departure from work in the best possible light? What should- and shouldnt- you say about your tenure with your belastung employer ended? It can be a challenge to come up withgood answers to questions regarding terminationfrom a prior job. You dont want to jeopardize your chances of getting a new position because of how you answered questions about how your last job ended. That said, becauseemployers check referencesand your previous employer may disclose the reason you were terminated, its important to be honest. If possible, talk to your previous empl oyer so youre sure that the reason you give and the reason the company gives match up. Options for Answering Questions Respond and move on. The simplest approach for responding toquestions about why you were terminated is to answer the inquiry directly and briefly so you can move on to other topics. Bring it up before the interviewer does. Another option is to bring up the issue before youre asked about it. Mentioning that you were terminated prior to being asked can be a way to explain your departure on your terms and move on to the rest of the interview. Keep it simple. Dont go into lengthy explanations and dont point blame. Its not a good idea to disparage your former company or boss. Dont blame yourself either. In fact, try your best to keep it positive by focusing on the fact that it was the job that wasnt agood fit. Dont give the interviewer any indication that you wont be a good employee if youre hired. Avoid Answers That Disqualify You Whenever possible, focus on iss ues which wont imply that youre not qualified for the job for which you are being considered. Avoid mentioning the word fired- you can avoid some of the stigma surrounding being fired if you dont come right out and say it. Terms like let go, the job wasnt the best fit and even termination sound better than fired. Mentioning a personal shortcoming which is not specifically related to the job youre interviewing for, while also referencing things you were successful at doing at your previous job, can be an effective way to respond to interview questions about why you schwefellost your job. Examples For example, you might have been terminated because of limitations with your ability to create computer programs for a technology platform. However, perhaps you excelled at resolving client problems and teaching others to use the software. If you are now exploring training, technical support, or sales positions the company might still maintain an interest in you as a candidate despite yo ur termination. Sometimes an employee is terminated because of a skill deficiency which can be addressed through coursework or seminars. For example, you may have been cut loose because you were unable to create complex Excel macros, but have subsequently taken a course where you have mastered Excel and can document your current competency. You can mention how you addressed the issue during the interviews. Downsizing and Restructuring In some cases, a termination might be at least partially attributed to downsizing or the de-emphasis of a product or service by a previous employer which was related to the candidates job function. Sometimes an organization loses ground to competitors and needs to eliminate staff while its product line is restructured. In this case, if you think you could excel at a function like sales support, or marketing with a more viable product line, for example, you might be able to pursue similar jobs with other more competitive employers in your industry. Overcoming Termination for Cause One of the hardest employment situations to handle, and to discuss in job interviews, is being terminated for cause. Do keep in mind thattermination for causeshould be a learning experience whereby you either reassess your strengths and weaknesses in order to move in a different job direction or to devise a plan to work on problem areas if you decide to stay the course in your current career field. Once you get your next job, youll have the opportunity to rebuild your career reputation and it will be much easier to job search next time around.

But because communication goes both ways, be sure to demonstrate your ability to listen as well as talk.3. CompetenceThe mora knowledge you have, the mora valuable youll be to your team. An understanding of the processes and tools is essential, but make sure that you also know when to delegate the work. Share exampl es of your competence through leadership and delegation by featuring past experiences in overcoming obstacles on your resume.4. CreativityDont use elaborate fonts or images on your resume. Instead, show your creativity through examples of innovative problem solving. If appropriate, you might also include examples of your creative hobbies and interests, such as painting or writing, but only if youve run out of relevant work history.5. HonestyDemonstrate your honesty by telling the truth about your work experience on your resume. Present yourself in the most positive light but never lie on a resume. Carefully review all details for accuracy before sending your resume off.6. OrganizationPresent a tidy, logical, and well-organized resume thats easy to scan to show your attention to detail and organization. Doing so will be a visible example of your professionalism and leadership skills.7. TeamworkShow examples on your resume of how youve participated in a team environment, both as a lea der and supporter. Demonstrate what youve achieved in quantifiable terms to show your leadership experiences to the best advantage. Add information about how many people you were leading, what the end result was, and how you participated as a team member. If you can obtain a positive quote or two about your teamwork skills from former team members, this will speak volumes about your leadership skills.8. VisionYour ability to see the scope and potential from a single project to a companys long-term future and potential is a soft skill thats difficult to demonstrate. However, the language you use in your executive summary and work description can convey your vision. What You Need to Know About Work Travel Programs - The Muse

What You Need to Know About Work Travel Programs - The Muse What You Need to Know About Work Travel Programs We all know that person who tags their beachy Instagram photos with the caption, “Today’s office!” while we’re stuck in a cubicle staring at our sad desk lunches. The digital nomad lifestyle might inspire jealousy- we want a beach office too!- and even some what-if daydreaming. But actually taking the leap can be pretty intimidating. Just the thought of having to deal with the logistics involved in such a big life and career change can be daunting. That’s where work travel programs such as Hacker Paradise, Remote Year, and Unsettled come in: They take care of the planning for you so you don’t have to go it alone. These startups- geared toward people who’d like to work remotely while traveling abroad, but without the hassle- provide accommodations, guaranteed WiFi, transportation, co-working spaces, excursions, social events, workshops, and sometimes even a SIM card as soon as you arrive. All you have to do is show up- and bring your work. The concept is simple, and it has become quite popular. If you’re interested in testing out life as a digital nomad with a structured work travel program rather than going solo, here are a few key things to know about these programs, with insights from past participants. It’s an Introduction to Digital Nomad Living Zoë Björnson spent the first few months after college graduation traveling around the world. Then she got a job working in marketing, but she wanted to continue hopping from city to city at the same time. “I wasn’t really the type of person who wanted to backpack around Southeast Asia or go teach somewhere,” she says. “Remote Year was the perfect mix in that it let me keep my job based in the States but just travel around,” without having to take care of all the logistical details. With the stress of planning travel- booking flights and searching for co-working spaces- in someone else’s hands, you can focus on your work. And it can be a convenient, lower-effort way to try out the digital nomad life. In the early stages of his career after college, Sib Mahapatra had already started feeling restless. He joined Hacker Paradise in 2016 and traveled with the program to Portugal, South Korea, and South Africa, while working as a consultant for startups and writing a novel. “Relative to just doing three months in South Africa on your own, the risk is way lower from a safety and community perspective,” Mahapatra says. “You just know that [the travel program] is gonna be there for you.” Relative to just doing three months in South Africa on your own, the risk is way lower from a safety and community perspective. Sib Mahapatra The experience, much like any new venture, also allows you to learn more about yourself- including, potentially, that digital nomad living might not be for you in the long term. Mahapatra, for example, enjoyed his program at first, but “at some point, you begin to miss having deeper roots in a place.” It’s Going to Cost You While this kind of wanderlust may be a common feeling, not everyone has the means to pursue it. And work travel programs aren’t cheap. Remote Year, for example, usually requires an initial fee of $3,000 or $3,500 plus $2,000 monthly payments for a four-month experience. Hacker Paradise prices range from $475 to $775 per week depending on how long you travel with them, and Unsettled retreats cost $2,000 to $4,000 per month depending on the destination. Though these startups love to market their convenience and how much comes with the package, daily meals, excursions, activities, and personal expenses might not be included. Björnson lived at home with her parents for a while to save up a little nest egg before she joined Remote Year. During the program, “each month I was spending $1,000 of my savings and $1,000 from my salary to cover the monthly expenses,” says Björnson. “It wasn’t too much of a stress for me at all,” she continues, since the cost of the program was equivalent to what she’d have been paying to live in a city like New York. But not everyone has guaranteed work going in as Björnson did. Victor Kung, a product manager originally from Chicago, was attempting to start his own marketing agency when he signed up for The Remote Trip to travel to Chiang Mai, Taipei, and Bali. “If you’re somebody like me and running your own business or freelancing, you don’t really have a guaranteed source of stable income, which is challenging,” he says. Victor Kung with fellow program participants in Chiang Mai courtesy of The Remote Trip. Digital nomads often seek out destinations with lower costs of living so that they don’t need to earn as much money to get by. These programs are different. Because they often have hefty price tags, they’re not a realistic option for everyone. Unless you have a decent and consistent stream of income during the program, you may not break even and could even end up in the hole if you don’t plan ahead and save up before taking off. You’ll Become More Skilled and Mindful at Work Working abroad with others may also help you become a better employee in the long run. Being a remote worker of any kind can strengthen your ability to focus on individual tasks and be more proactive, and working and traveling in these programs together with people in other industries can foster innovative thinking. “I really like that it forced me to be even more autonomous in my work by finding creative and new ways to be more productive, develop more processes for my team, and to think a little bit differently,” says Björnson, who even ended up hiring one of the people in her program. Zoë Björnson in her beach office courtesy of Zoë Björnson. Another benefit: Getting advice from people in different fields with different roles, and at various life and career stages. Some of the programs even offer workshops for job training and personal growth led by an experience leader or fellow participant. On an Unsettled retreat, for example, you might find sessions on meditation, web design, or better organizational skills. It’s About the Friends, Community, and Professional Network While participants may miss out on face time with folks in their home offices, there is also value in the communities that form among program cohorts, since members generally travel with the same people for an extended time period. Alums of these programs say that the biggest benefit was the network of people, and many participants considered their fellow travelers to be more like lifelong friends than just colleagues. Ultimately, the most lasting effect on each of their careers came from these professional connections, the thoughtful advice they got, and the new skills they learned from one another (through facilitated skill-sharing workshops or more informally). It’s not worth it when you can’t invest in those social relationships. Kaisu Koskela To get the most out of the experience, be prepared to put time into the social aspects. Kaisu Koskela, an academic from Helsinki who spends most of her time doing research and writing, traveled with both Unsettled and Hacker Paradise. For her, the people were the biggest gain, so much so that it sometimes became difficult to balance work priorities with the social life the programs offered. “It’s not worth it when you can’t invest in those social relationships,” she says. The relationships she formed during her own trips mean that now, “pretty much anywhere I go in the world, I can reach out to someone,” Koskela says. Moving around from city to city can bring about a sense of instability, but these programs can provide not only logistical, but also social structure to the digital nomad lifestyle. That social and professional support system can last long after the program is done.

Types of College Recruiting Programs

Types of College Recruiting Programs Types of College Recruiting Programs Many large employers have formal college recruitment programs they use to recruit college students and alumni for job, internship, summer job and co-op opportunities at the company. Smaller companies also recruit on a less formal basis, posting new job openings as they become available. College Recruiting When a company has a college recruitment program they have easy and select access to candidates from colleges and universities. Most schools utilize a recruiting job posting service (like NACElink or Experience) to manage their campus and on-site recruiting programs. Employers can list jobs and internships directly on the schools jobs website which is available only for students and alumni from the school. Companies also participate in campus recruiting programs, job fairs, career fairs, as well as offering information sessions to provide students with information about the company. For students and alumni, college recruitment programs are an opportunity to discover more about potential employers, to apply for jobs and internships specifically posted for candidates from your school, and to meet with companies on campus and/or by invitation to the companys offices. The following is a list of typical college recruitment programs. The types of programs offered vary by school. Depending on the school, visit the career services office and/or the alumni office website for details. Types of College Recruitment Programs Campus Interviews: Companies which hire a large number of entry-level candidates may come to campus to recruit. Students (and alumni, if eligible) apply for open positions. The company schedules campus interviews with selected candidates. On-Site Interviews: Companies who opt not to visit campus may post jobs and invite applicants to interview at the organizations office. Second interviews may also be held on-site for candidates selected for further consideration after a campus interview. Phone Interviews: Phone interviews are often used to screen college candidates because it saves the expense of visiting campus or providing transportation for the student or alumni to the employers site. Career offices may provide interview space with a landline for interviews. Video Interview: Video  may be used for long-distance interviews. Students may be able to interview from their computer in their dorm room or their university may offer computers and webcams for interviews. Information Meetings: Information meetings and information tables, usually held in the campus center, are used to promote awareness of organizations and reach students who may not be aware of available opportunities. Campus Job and Career Fairs: Campus career and job fairs provide means for employers to meet with many applicants and vice versa. Each employer participating in the career fair has a table where they provide information on the company and available opportunities. Candidates will have a few minutes to talk with each company representative. Off-Campus Recruiting Programs: Many college consortiums participate in multi-employer off-campus recruiting programs.  Students from all the colleges in the consortium attend an interview with employers. Some programs also have a career fair component so applicants have an opportunity to meet with employers in addition to those they are interviewing with. Career Networking Programs: Career networking programs are offered by career offices and alumni offices. They provide an opportunity for students and alumni to engage with other alumni either in a campus setting or off-campus. These types of programs provide the opportunity to learn more about alumni career paths, as well as for job search networking. Check With Career Services To find out what recruitment programs are available, check with the career services office for information on available services for students, alumni, and employers.

2 research-backed strategies employees can use against a bullying boss

2 research-backed strategies employees can use against a bullying boss 2 research-backed strategies employees can use against a bullying boss When your boss is making you miserable, too many of us grit our teeth and bear it, thinking we have no power to fight back. According to the Workplace Bullying Institute, 65.6 million U.S. employees said they have bosses who intimidate, humiliate and verbally abuse them. But a new study in the Academy of Management Journal found that there are effective coping strategies employees can use against an abusive boss that do not involve throwing up a white flag and quitting. Instead of passively avoiding the problem, or aggressively confronting your boss, business management researchers found that employees can leverage their value to the boss’ goals to tactfully address the bad behavior without risking their careers.Strategy 1: Make yourself indispensable to your bossCiting studies on abusive bosses, researchers explained that the passive option of distancing yourself from your boss is less likely to work because abusive behavior is more likely to persist than stop on its own. Bullying bosses rarely experience sudden changes of heart. Instead of waiting it out, researchers propose overcoming your fight-or-flight instinct by working more closely with your bullying boss and enhancing your value to them. How do you do this? You need to work above and beyond to learn unique skills your boss cannot easily get elsewhere: “The strategy is for the follower to make himself or herself indispensable to the leader by demonstrating specific knowledge, skills, abilities, or resources that are valuable to the leader,” the study advises. “For example, the follower may take the initiative to acquire a new skill or obtain critical information that is important to the leader.”When your boss depends on you, they are motivated to change positively, not out of the kindness of their hearts, but out of self-interest to keep their team productive. In two field studies on employee-supervisor relationships in a real estate firm and at a commercial bank, the researchers found that “ the mutual high dependence between managers and followers is characterized by positive interactions, reduced use of threats and coercion, and more importantly, enhanced stability and congeniality in the dyadic relationship.”When your boss knows they need you, they are less likely to act out against you and become more likely to listen to your needs.Strategy 2: Team up with coworkers to confront your bossResearchers called this strategy “coalition formation.” If you are feeling vulnerable to a bullying boss, play the numbers game and find allies with top performers in your office to defend you.Multiple employees presenting a united front have more leverage to confront a single hostile boss, the researchers found: “The leader may rely on a specific follower in the team for key performance outcomes (e.g., sales promotion). If the focal follower is able to convince a highly valued follower to form a united, coordinated front against the leader, the leader may view the focal foll ower as a ‘single-unit’ with the valued follower.”Employees with bad bosses are not as helpless as they thinkOf course, managing your boss should not be up to employees alone. But this study should give hope to employees suffering quietly that they have more power and agency than they think to fight back. Rather than seeing themselves as defenseless victims, employees can deploy creative tactics like value enhancement and coalition formation to reduce supervisor abuse, so that they can focus on doing their actual job.Writing about their study for Harvard Business Review, coauthors Hui Liao,  Elijah Wee, and Dong Liu said that when employees show their combined value to their boss, the knowledge shifts the power balance back in the employees’ favor: “Taken together, value enhancement and coalition formation send a strong message to the supervisor: ‘You need me more than you think, so take better care of me.’  â€

Never Be Afraid to Write a Cover Letter Again

Never Be Afraid to Write a Cover Letter Again Never Be Afraid to Write a Cover Letter Again Once again, you’ve found yourself staring at a blank Word doc devising the best way to write the dreaded cover letter. You ask yourself, is this even necessary? Does anybody even read these? Sadly, the answer is yes and yes. A cover letter is your chance to show your personality and impress the hiring manager for your dream job; or any job for that matter. Your resume can only take you so far, but your cover letter fills in the experiences between a resume’s bullet points. Here are some tips on cover letter writing to make the process a little less painful. Keep it Short and Sweet Just like your resume, keep the cover letter to one page. Think of it this way: would you want to read pages and pages of someone’s work experience? Probably not. Start with a catchy introduction about yourself and perhaps what drew you to the position. Stay away from boring intros like, “I am applying for such-and-such position and would love to work for you.” They already know this, otherwise they wouldn’t have your cover letter in front of them. The next two paragraphs should highlight your experiences relevant to the job, and what you bring to the company, i.e. why they should hire you. Write no more than three paragraphs, keeping it short but still informative. Your Skills are Valuable Starting with what you bring to the table will catch your reader’s attention and let them know why you’re the best candidate. Only highlight experiences that are relevant to the job, but be sure to emphasize your soft skills. Some examples could be your communication skills, or how you problem solve; these attributes demonstrate how you handle projects in the workplace. If you’re newly out of college and feel like you don’t have much to offer by way of experience, then emphasize your education and abilities. For instance, be sure to highlight large projects you may have worked on in school, or any volunteering opportunities you had. These types of experiences are valid and show the hiring manager that you were proactive in college. What You Bring to the Table This paragraph can be tricky to write because you really have to sell yourself. Unless you’re brimming over with confidence, you may be like most people and have trouble marketing yourself. To start, write about what drew you to the job, your passion will shine through giving you authenticity. Being authentic gives you credibility and managers want to know they’re hiring someone reliable. The second half of the paragraph is where you explain why they should hire you. A manager is determined to hire for a few reasons: there’s an open position, a position is needed to solve a problem, or a new role needs to be created. Sell them on how you fit their needs; it shows them you’ve done your research and are determined to secure the job. Wrap it up Nicely The last section of your cover letter should be a few sentences on how they may contact you and when you’ll be following up. It’s very important you follow up with the recruiter or hiring manager because they go through many applications and won’t remember every single one, even if they liked you. Make it easier on them by following up, at the latest, two weeks after you send your letter. Checking in shows how much you want the position, which will help them remember you better, and that will hopefully lead to the interview. We know they’re tough to write, but don’t let your loathing for cover letters get in the way of landing an interview. You want it to stand out above the rest, and it’s possible, if you show who you are. Keep it simple and full of personality so you can impress the hiring manager before you two even meet. My Engineers Notebook Bryony DuPont

My Engineer’s Notebook Bryony DuPont My Engineer’s Notebook Bryony DuPont My Engineer’s Notebook: Bryony DuPont ASME member Bryony DuPont, Ph.D., an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Oregon State University, conducts research in artificial intelligence and sustainability science, using simulation, optimization, and advanced computation to make sustainable solutions more realistically feasible. Bryony, who was named as ASMEs representative in the 2016 class of DiscoverEs New Faces of Engineering-Professional program, is also involved in a number of STEM volunteer and outreach activities for young women in her area. A member of ASME since 2010, she is the co-lead of the ASME Early Career Engineering Committees Design and Advanced Manufacturing Market Segment Team, and has previously served the Society as a reviewer, review coordinator and workshop organizer for the Societys International Design Engineering Technical Conferences (IDETC). Bryony received a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from Case Western Reserve University in 2008. She earned a both a masters degree and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 2010 and 2013, respectively. Whats inside your engineers notebook? All sorts of things. Lots of notes from reading papers and articles and from discussions with my students. I have a terrible short-term memory, so Im always taking notes in meetings, at conferences, and thesis defenses. There are lots of product ideas and new research ideas, too usually sketched out too quickly from excitement and then I have to decipher my own scribbles when returning to my ideas. Whose notebook would you most like to peek into? Why? Grace Hopper. She was a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy and a prolific programmer. (Shes credited with first using the word bug to represent a coding error, due to finding an actual moth in the circuitry!) Doing what she did at a time when women faced huge cultural obstacles to learning engineering must have been an incredible challenge, and Id love to know more about her day-to-day work and motivations. Bryony DuPont How and when did you know you wanted to become an engineer? I grew up in the middle of nowhere, so we were constantly building things, taking things apart, and generally making our own fun. I was always into my math and science courses, but it was an interest in spacecraft that ended up pushing me toward engineering. One of my earliest memories is watching space shuttle footage with my brothers and sketching out new shuttle concepts. I read a lot of books (science fiction and nonfiction) that dealt with space, and even had a signed copy of Homer Hickhams Rocket Boys. Though I didnt end up studying aerospace engineering (I switched into mechanical engineering for my bachelors degree), growing up during the shuttle years was hugely influential. Whats the most exciting project youve ever worked on? My research team works on developing computational algorithms for real-world green challenges, like renewable energy systems and sustainable product design. I really think all of our work is important and exciting, though I am clearly biased. So far, weve designed much more efficient onshore wind farms, some of the first wave energy converter arrays, and tools that help engineering designers conceptualize everyday products that have a reduced environmental impact. Were driven by the idea that environmentally friendly systems and products arent some far-fetched idea, and if were smart about their design and implementation, ideas like cost-effective renewable energy and innovative sustainable products can happen tomorrow, not years down the road. What do you think youd be doing if you hadnt become an engineer? I have bit of a performance bug, and Ive been acting and performing in musicals since I was young. Id love to say that Id be on Broadway, but that would probably be overselling my talent a bit. Ill stick to engineering, I think I really do have the best job in the world. A few of the imaginative carved cakes Bryony has made for her family and friends during her spare time. Whats your favorite activity when youre not working? Making cakes. I like to challenge my engineering and artistic skills by making complex, carved cakes for my friends and family. Its been an adventure and Ive learned an awful lot along the way. Was there a book or a movie that piqued your interest in science or inspired you to become an engineer? So many! As is that case with many engineers, I really cannot emphasize how influential science fiction (and science fact) has been in my life. Im a huge Star Trek: The Next Generation Trekker(thanks, mum!), and I watched Space Camp enough times to wear out the VHS tape. From The Right Stuff and Rocket Boys to Doctor Who and Mythbusters, Ive experienced so many eye-opening engineering experiences from the arts. I still watch movies and read books and think to myself, I really want to learn how to do that! Who are your heroes, either within the engineering profession or in the rest of your life? I have a wall of prints in my office devoted to my rock stars prominent scientists that are my heroes, including Newton, Tesla, Turing, and Hopper. I love it when students ask me about a name they dont recognize from the wall. Ive had the chance to speak at great length about Ada Lovelace that way. Personally, my grandfather has been a huge influence in my life. Hes a mathematician and all-around geek, and encouraged me to be a geek, too. Whats the most meaningful or rewarding aspect of being connected to engineering? Im an engineer and an educator, and while mechanical design research is my first love, I love getting younger students involved in science and engineering. Just last week, some of our graduate students and faculty went to the USA Science and Engineering Festival in Washington, D.C., and we met thousands of young people who are fascinated by fundamental engineering principles. Helping to provide opportunities for students to learn more about what engineers do by making helicopters out of paper cups, learning how robots can be made out of squishy materials, and firing ping pong balls at 400 mph was so rewarding for all of us. Helping students have aha moments is an awesome feeling. What does ASME mean to you? ASME has provided me with so many opportunities as an early career engineer in research, education, and service. I started attending ASME conferences six years ago, and have met countless collaborators, mentors, and friends all of whom have had a positive impact on my career. Im also the co-lead of the ASME Design and Manufacturing Market Segment Team, where were working to create new and exciting content for ASME events. I co-run programs for students at ASME IDETC, including a design competition and a graduate student workshop, which lets me interface directly with the next generation of researchers. I also have my undergraduate design students work on the annual ASME Student Design Competition, which gives them the opportunity to design and build mechanisms for regional and national competitions. To me, ASME is a common thread in all aspects of my career, and Im immensely grateful for the opportunities ASME provides. To me, ASME is a common thread in all aspects of my career, and I'm immensely grateful for the opportunities ASME provides.”Bryony DuPont

Overcome your Sunday scaries  26 tricks to reclaim your weekend

Overcome your Sunday scaries â€"  26 tricks to reclaim your weekend Overcome your Sunday scaries â€"  26 tricks to reclaim your weekend No matter how much you love your job, you have probably experienced a version of the infamous Sunday scaries. This is the feeling that Sunday, the second day of the precious weekend, doesn’t quite belong to you- that from the moment you wake up, the day is a dismal countdown to the dreaded Monday.According to a LinkedIn survey, 80 percent of working professionals have reported experiencing the Sunday scaries. Of those who reported feeling the onset of Sunday scaries, 1 in 3 admitted they have them every week. Why so scared? Among other things, professionals have reported that they experience these weekly “frights” due to an incoming workload (60 percent), a poor work/life balance (44 percent), and unfinished work from the prior week (39 percent.)Seemingly, the answer to defeating the Sunday scaries would be to change jobs. If you are dreading work on a weekly basis, then surely you are deeply unhappy at your own job.Perhaps, though, the Sunday scaries can be defeated in other, l ess extreme ways. This year, let’s defeat the Sunday scaries for once and for all. We came up with a few ways to put those icky feelings to bed, to reclaim your weekend, and to arrive Monday morning refreshed and ready to go.1. Party lessThink of the worst set of Sunday scaries you have ever experienced- where you were curled up in the fetal position in your bed, unable to get up but also unable to sleep. I can think of some of mine. They all had two things in common- alcohol and late bedtime.Weekends can be a fun time to let go. But let go too much? You can end up paying for that well into mid-week. Seriously. Do that enough and it really starts to take a toll on your mental health, your physical health, your relationships, and, yes, your job.I’m not here to preach about your party habits, but next time you have a set of Sunday scaries after a long night of drinking and carousing with your friends, think about it. Is it worth feeling like hot garbage all day, drowning in Gatora de, and soaking in greasy pizza? Is it worth the weird emotional (and intensely physical) duress you go through the day after? Late night parties can often be the culprit in particular cases of nasty Sunday scaries. Our first tip is this: party less. This doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a margarita (or maybe even two) with your girlfriends on a Saturday night. Be mindful about what your body can handle, how safe you’re being, and how you might pay for your decisions in the days to come.2. Exercise over the weekendNow that you’re drinking less, go for a run. Hate running? Go for a hike or take a yoga class. In short, do something that gets your heart rate going, makes you feel good, and leaves you feeling refreshed and accomplished.By now, most people know that exercising has both physical and mental benefits. Exercise is known to produce endorphins and enkephalins. These hormones are your body’s natural feel-good rewards generated by exercise. In addition, exercise will often g et you outside, whether it be for a hike or a run, and in the direct path of some Vitamin D.The old hippocampus is incredibly important to our mental health. Guess what? Exercise has been proven to create new hippocampal neurons - these neurons are involved with memory, emotion regulation, and learning.Give your Fitbit a treat and seize those 10,000 steps!3. Go to a museumFeed your brain and soul some art this weekend. Sundays are a great day for an early trip to the museum. According to Attention Restoration Theory, your brain needs to shift mental gears in order to refocus its attention. A great way to do that is to physically remove yourself from your everyday routine.Going to a museum can rest your brain with thoughts of fascination (of seeing something new), get yourself away from your typical surroundings (get out of your apartment), and it typically places you somewhere that aligns with your tastes and purposes. If you live in a small town, there might be a smaller museum bas ed around your region. Learn something new about where you live - maybe it’s even where you grew up. If that’s not available, consider browsing some of the world’s most amazing museums online. Museums like New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art showcase much of their collection (thousands of works of art) online.4. Learn something newLearn something new - or at least start to learn. We are all guilty of saying we will do things - eventually when we have the time. Chances are, if you are wallowing in Sunday scaries, you might have some time to devote to a new craft. Maybe learn how to sew or knit. Or start learning an entirely new language! Use easy programs like Duolingo to finally brush up on your high school French. Learning a new skill or a new language is a great way to give yourself purpose. If you use Monday morning to brag about what you learned about this past weekend- well, hey, that’s just a great perk!Sidenote - you can literally learn anything on YouTube.5. Wake up earlyWe are not all morning people, I know.Getting up on the weekday is trial enough for some people. But getting that early bird on the weekend is crucial to taking back your weekend. Try getting up as early as you would on a Monday. Go out for a morning stroll, get a coffee, walk your dog, or go for a run.Sleeping in until 12 p.m. on a Sunday is almost guaranteed to start you off on the wrong foot. By waking earlier than others, you can take advantage of the quieter part of Sunday and still have a whole day to yourself.6. Take a social media hiatusSocial media can be a bummer, especially on the weekends. Have you ever been in bed well into the afternoon scrolling through Instagram? Suddenly, the sun is setting and you a re three hours deep in your best friend’s ex-boyfriend’s sister’s cousin’s Instagram feed. Can you believe she is in Peru? Didn’t she just go to Italy in 2014? How is she so tan already? She sure uses a lot of filters …OMG, get off social media.Seriously, take a day off. It’s a wonderful feeling. If you have to delete it from your phone, do it. You can always re-download it tomorrow. Social media is proven to give users feelings of anxiety and loneliness when they use it to compare lives. It can seem especially daunting over the weekend when everyone seems to be doing everything. Well, everyone but you. Ditch Instagram, Twitter, and Co. this week. Go out, do something, and let no evidence hit the internet at all. It can be your little secret.7. Take a hiatus from all screensIf you tried ditching Instagram (and you liked it), consider taking a break from all glowing screens this weekend.Instead, try one of those paper-y things. They’re kind of like a Netflix binge but without video and they are kind of cool. You know, like Twitter, but longer. Like Instagram, but less pictures of food. A book. Read a book. Do it.8. Have a substance-free weekendRemember how we talked about booze’s role in Sunday scaries? If alcohol and other substances are playing into your Sunday blues, consider having a fully substance-free weekend.Pay attention to how it makes you feel. Do you feel better? Does it make you feel anxious to socialize without substance? Take note. If you feel like you might have a problem that is bigger than an occasional hangover, consider contacting the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).Know that you are never alone.9. Go for a long walkMaybe this technically counts as “exercise,” but I wanted to include it anyway. Go for a walk without any real intentions. If you are feeling really crappy, give it five or ten minutes before giving up. Take along some headphones. Queue up your favorite songs, a great podca st, or a new audiobook and go for a walk in your neighborhood. This is one of my favorite ways to decompress. Unlike vigorous exercise, you can walk for a while. I get some of my best thinking done on walks. The best part? Sometimes, you might leave with the intention of walking for 5 minutes only to return two hours later. Walking is a great way to get outside, get your blood pumping, and work out your thoughts- all while taking in some moving scenery.10. Do (a little) retail therapyDon’t roll your eyes at me! Retail therapy is a cheap (well, hopefully) and easy fix, sometimes. Just like anything, it’s okay in moderation. Don’t blow $500 on a jacket because you feel a little down. Be smart. If you’re really dreading going into the office, maybe a slick new Monday outfit will give you a boost of motivation. If you’re feeling really down, go for a quick shop. Treat yourself.11. Start a Sunday journalIf you’re plagued with negative Sunday thoughts, take some of them to pape r.Why are you feeling down? What did you do the night before? What is coming up this week that makes you anxious?By beginning to keep track of these thoughts and putting pen to paper, you can better understand why you’re feeling this way.12. MediateHave you ever tried meditation as a way to rid yourself of negative energy? Before you scoff it off, think about it.Meditation has been proven to alter your brain’s grey matter in as little as eight weeks. What does that mean? Well, your brain’s grey matter is a major part of your central nervous system. It is associated with processing information and providing nutrients to neurons. Meditation’s effect on your brain’s grey matter can improve memory, increase empathy, heighten your sense of self, and relieve stress. So, try a meditation center or pick up a meditation class at your local yoga studio, if they offer it. If you’re shy about meditation, that’s no problem. There are tons of meditation apps that allow you to try fro m home.13. Create Sunday night goalsSunday evening can be the worst, especially if you’re having a bad case of the scaries. Instead of wallowing in it and counting down the hours until Monday morning, create a list of goals. What do you want to do this week? Maybe you want to hit the gym three times, get dinner with a friend you haven’t seen, and buy a birthday present for your mom. Instead of worrying about all that you may have to do, start your week by carving out “me time” and organizing your goals - no matter how big or small they may seem.14. Think about your accomplishmentsGive yourself a boost! It’s always good to take note of what you have accomplished. Many women have experienced some negative self-speak. If you feel like you didn’t get enough done last week, change tracksWhat did you accomplish? Even if it’s something small like making it into work on time every day, note it. Don’t be so hard on yourselfIf you think of your accomplishments and you’re sti ll unimpressed, consider how you can improve in the coming week.15. Do mid-week thingsGuess what? You have free will all week long. Sure, work can take up a good portion of your day, but it’s probably not taking up all 24 hours (if it is, maybe it’s time to start looking for a new job.)Skip a night of television in bed and go out. Catch a new movie with a friend or get dinner with your significant other. Don’t put so much pressure on the weekend being the only leisure time you have. Get it going on a Tuesday.16. Count your freaking blessingsI recently saw a church sign on the internet. It read, “Get rich quick! Count your blessings.”I don’t want to be too preachy here. Sometimes, we all need to take a moment to register how lucky we are, that we have a job to even go to, and that we are in good health.Sometimes, a little mindful gratitude will help you out of a funk. Sometimes it won’t - that’s ok, too.17. Plan a full SundayWhen you’re anticipating some Sunday sca ries, plan ahead. Feelings of anxiety and depression usually creep in when your mind is less busy.Purposefully plan a wonderful Sunday that is full of activities you love. Instead of counting down the minutes until Monday morning traffic, distract yourself. See a movie, do some yoga, and get dinner with a friend. Basically, take everything on this list and have the busiest, best Sunday ever.18. Clean your houseI need to be in the mood to clean. However, when I am in that mood, I go nuts. Clean the tub and behind the toilet where all that gross dust and dirt accumulates. Dust your moldings and clean out under your bed. Maybe even organize your closet?Doing a deep clean will usually distract you from creeping negative thoughts. Let your favorite podcast or a throwback album accompany you on your cleaning quest. Throw on a pair of headphones and go for a deep clean this Sunday. Your feelings of accomplishment coupled with your sparkling home are almost guaranteed to clear any mood.19. Cook a delicious mealThere’s this Greek nachos recipe that I have been promising to make my boyfriend for two years now. They aren’t even hard to make- I’m just that lazy over the weekend.Next time you’re facing a Sunday afternoon of dread, consider making a big, delicious meal for yourself- and maybe some friends, too.20. Prep your weekGet your stuff together on Sunday.Make the onslaught of the week more palatable by planning your week in advance. This can include preparing lunches for the week, planning what you’re going to wear to work (and making sure it’s all clean), and ensuring that you are ahead of the game before you go to sleep on Sunday evening.21. Front load your FridaysSpeaking of prepping work - if your Sunday scaries are due to a seemingly insurmountable amount of work, then see what you can front load on Friday afternoon. That’s right - instead of counting down the minutes to 5 p.m. on Friday afternoon, stay awhile.Get some work done on Friday afterno on and evening instead of scrambling all of Monday morning. Even if you missed the mark on Friday afternoon, you can soothe your worries by hitting the books on Sunday night. You should not be working around the clock every week. Ebbs and flows of work are normal in any workplace. However, if your job has left you with a regularly overwhelming workload, you might want to communicate this to a manager or look for a new job altogether.22. Catch up with someoneRemember the good old days? Remember your senior year of college, when you didn’t even have your first class until Tuesday afternoon?Instead of sulking in your own memories, use the weekend to catch up with an old friend. Take an afternoon to laugh about college, to share stories from your life as it stands, and maybe even to get some advice from an old friend.23. Get a massageNeed I say more? Get a massage - whenever you can afford to, just do it.24. Hang out with a dog (or cat)Along the same lines of the massage tip, I think this one is pretty self-explanatory. Unless you are allergic, hang out with a cool dog or a cat. Go for a walk in the park or cuddle up and watch a movie.Studies have shown that when a person pets a friendly dog, blood pressure decreases, breathing becomes more regular and muscle tension relaxes. I’m not crying, you are. Go hang out with a dog.25. Call your momWhen I am feeling bummed out, I always call my mom. She makes me feel good and she lifts me up. If you have a person who can do that for you, call her.Sunday Scaries26. Make sure it’s just the Sunday scariesSometimes, Sunday scaries aren’t Sunday scaries at all. If you are repeatedly having feelings of depression or anxiety, consider that it might be more than a Sunday occurrence.Almost 18.8 million American adults experience depression each year - it’s very common so don’t feel alone in it. If you feel that your Sunday scaries may be more deeply rooted, speak to someone. Here are some resources to get you started:T his article first appeared on Career Contessa.
